Like I said above, there are still several issues with the movie however. Hijikata’s actor is especially good at switching between the mayo loving badass we know and his Otaku counterpart. The action scenes were great again and the acting is still well done. So we get to see Hijikata become a big Otaku, as well as the Shinsengumi being taken over by Itou Kamotarou. They decided to adapt the Shinsengumi Crisis Arc. That was hilarious but disturbing at the same time. that has to go to seeing Gintoki and Shinpachi in drag…. As for things I would rather un-see in this movie…. Then we get a surprise by Katsura and Elizabeth that really only pays off if you have seen a movie at a Japanese cinema before. The movie had some fun at the very beginning by starting with the classic static image of Gintoki’s house and the cast speaking over it. Well, they did a lot of that in this movie along with the yelling. The whole panel/scene is just the character’s faces in awe, disgust, anger, among other emotions. If you have ever watched or read anything to do with Gintama, and most other comedy manga of this type, you know how some panels/scenes are just characters in shock over whats happening. It also feels like they tried to recreate scenes from the manga panel by panel which is something only huge fans would notice. The sequel has a lot more fun with the funny half of the movie. These small issues are easy to look past however due to the unadulterated fun that this movie brings.

There are still some issues from the original, like the early 2000’s level of CG and special effects and the sometimes questionable music chooses (yes Gintama is a quirky series but some of the music that would play during fight scenes just didn’t feel right.). I would say that the sequel cranked everything good about the original to 20. I guess I should start the real review now huh? I was holding myself back from laughing too loudly because I didn’t want to stand out or anything. Parts of the movie that are legitimately super funny would get good hearty chuckles but nothing like the crying laughing that occurs often in western theatres. However, even in comedy movies, they seem to restrain themselves.
Now I got to watch this sequel in a Japanese theatre surrounded by, you guessed it, Japanese people and it certainly added to the experience. So the first movie wasn’t terrible! In fact I was quite impressed, considering how low budget Japanese live action movies tend to be. Not only did it not suck, it actually managed to balance the humour and comedy of the series pretty well! Sure they retold the benizakura arc again (for the third time now?) but the first half of the movie dealt with some funny arcs from the manga like the bug catching arc (seeing the actor who plays Kondo drenched in honey is still something I wish I could un-see however). Two sentence review about the first movie? Holy crap they managed to make a live action version that didn’t suck. I wonder what everyone thought of me watching a crazy movie like that…. I wonder if the person next to me noticed the giant grin on my face when I found out they had the movie.
I was lucky enough to watch the first movie on one of my plane flights to Japan and the movie had english subtitles! That plane flight was amazing just for that. Now before we get started, I will mention the first live action movie since I never made a dedicated post about it. Yes, Yes, another post about Gintama? Is that all you care about?Īnyways, I thought I would write up a quick review of the new live action Gintama movie that just came out in Japan! While sadly, the movie didn’t have any english subtitles (it would have been extremely weird if there was) I could still understand about half of what was said (go me and two years of Japanese classes!) and due to the fact that I have seen and read all of the original material, I was able to follow the movie pretty well.
